TSMC continues to invest in research and development, with total R&D expenditures up about 19% from the previous year, accounting for 8% of the total revenue. The staff of the R&D organization increases about 13%, a level that equals or exceeds the R&D investment of many other leading high-tech companies.
A strong portfolio of intellectual property rights strengthens TSMC's technology leadership. As of 2017, TSMC's patent portfolio has reached over 30,000 patents worldwide to ensure the Company's technology leadership and maximum profit.
