TSMC Strikes a Balance between Technology and Ecology
TSMC is very much concerned about environmental sustainability and has committed to numerous green initiatives such as ecological conservation, energy saving and carbon reduction. In 2008, TSMC launched its conservation efforts with its first ecological pond with a natural retaining wall. As part of the Company's active support of the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as well as the Aichi Biodiversity Target, TSMC has been involved in numerous green initiatives, including the promotion of green buildings, the introduction of biodiversity concepts, and conducting the Taiwan semiconductor industry's first independent eco-survey in 2017 to evaluate the impact of the Company's operations on the environment and on biodiversity.
Understanding the Impact of the Company's Operations on the Ecological Environment
From April 2017 to February 2018, TSMC partnered with a professional ecological survey consulting company to conduct the first "on-site ecological survey" in the domestic semiconductor industry. The survey was conducted by monitoring the ecological surroundings of the Company's science parks in Longtan, Hsinchu, Taichung and Tainan throughout the four seasons. Results of the study showed that there were more than 493 species of plants found within TSMC's sites, of which 257 species (accounting for as much as 52.1% )were considered native and endemic species in Taiwan. Based on "A Preliminary Red List of Taiwanese Vascular Plants," a total of 52 species of rare plants were also found at our sites. These rare plants included the Cephalanthus naucleoides, Dendranthema lavandulifolium, Eulophia graminea, and Pogostemon stellatus. In addition to plants, TSMC's sites also boast an equally rich array of animal species. More than 209 species of animals were found, mostly birds and butterflies, followed by crickets. In addition, there were 13 types of rare and endangered species of wild animals, including the Paguma larvata, Accipiter trivirgatus, Otus lettia and Lanius cristatus, among others. The results of the ecological survey highlighted not only extremely abundant and rich variety of species found inside TSMC's fab sites, but also demonstrated the balanced and harmonious development of the Company with its environment.
Creating an Environmentally Friendly Habitat
TSMC has produced outstanding results in green sustainability with its clearly defined ecological development goals and positive actions. Through its Green, ConseRvation, Eco-Friendly, and Education policies, the Company has sought to protect the country's Natural resources. TSMC has carried out multifaceted greening at its fab sites, as well as established diverse habitats. For example, by establishing ecological zones, channels, and ponds to bring in water, the Company has provided a suitable habitat for birds and butterflies. In addition, to ensure a balanced biodiversity, TSMC has gradually introduced native plants to the grounds, cultivating a rich collection of plant species that will lure in butterflies and birds while supplying them with a variety of food. With the Company's commitment towards wholesome and safe management, it has provided a friendly and low-interference ecological environment. TSMC endeavours to transform itself into a "sustainable ecological green park" and showcase the all-new ideal of a harmonious relationship between science and ecology.

Released the First Ecological Survey Report, That Was both Educational and Supervisory
After completing the on-site ecological survey of its science parks, the Company used the data gathered to put together TSMC's first "Ecological Survey Report" in April 2017, which used the Biodiversity Index to understand the growth and decline of living organisms. With its intrinsic educational value, the publication is given out during community visits or public exhibits, helping to raise the ecological awareness of employees and the public, as well as providing them with a more well-rounded perspective of TSMC. In addition, the publication also exercises an independent supervisory role, enabling improvement in a number of areas through an understanding of our sites' ecosystems. All these efforts demonstrate TSMC's unwavering commitment towards the environment and its contribution to society.
Through objective and rigorous surveys, TSMC has incorporated biodiversity issues into its ecological development strategy. In 2018, as the Company strives to exert a greater green influence on its environment, it will compile the second volume of the annual ecological report, which is the on-site ecological survey data gathered throughout the four seasons. In addition, we will turn our focus towards the conservation of rare and endangered species, including the migration of threatened species such as the Cuora flavomarginata, to livable environments and the independent cultivation of Dendranthema lavandulifolium and other endangered plants.
