TSMC Ramps Fab 10 Wafer Production

Serving China's Emerging IC Market

China has remarkably transformed itself into a manufacturing power. With a continuously improving infrastructure, China will attract significant investment in the coming decade. TSMC's customers can now participate in China's prosperity through Fab 10. The new fab, which officially opened at the end of October, is running initial production and is in position to take new chip orders. The new fab was brought on line to help companies comply with China's local manufacturing provisions and to improve local logistics efficiency.

Fab 10's capacity plan calls for a volume ramp to 15,000 wafers per month by the end of 2005, with a monthly capacity of 5,000 eight-inch wafers at the end of 2004.

"TSMC (Shanghai) will focus on the development of the China semi-conductor market with a goal toward increasing our customers' competitiveness in both China and the global markets. This collaboration with our customers also marks a leading effort in strengthening China's IC design industry," said Dr. F.C. Tseng, Deputy CEO of TSMC and Chairman of TSMC (Shanghai).

"We are calling upon China's excellent human resources and industrial policies to strengthen partnerships in China's fast-growing supply chain. With the start of volume production at TSMC (Shanghai), Fab 10 joins TSMC's other facilities in Taiwan, the United States and Singapore in serving our diversified customers around the globe," he explained.

"We will capitalize on TSMC's leadership and experience in IC manufacturing to realize our vision of becoming China design community's best partner in the 'Invented-and-Made in China' arena," said Mr. YC Chao, President of TSMC (Shanghai).

"We stand ready to extend TSMC's visionary collaborative partnership to designers requiring integrated front-end and back-end services. Our aim is to maximize their product yield, accelerate time-to-volume, and optimize process integration within the supply chain," he explained.

On October 28, 2004 TSMC held its first China Technology Symposium at the facility's brand new auditorium. The event attracted nearly 300 attendees and featured 15 booths in the Partner Pavilion.

TSMC (Shanghai) Company Limited was established in 2003. Located in Shanghai's Songjiang District, Fab 10 began wafer manufacturing in the 3rd quarter. Initial customer products have shown yields comparable to those in TSMC's other fabs.
