Established in 1987, TSMC is the world's first dedicated semiconductor foundry. As the founder and a leader of the dedicated IC foundry segment, TSMC has built its reputation by offering advanced and "More-than-Moore" wafer production processes and unparalleled manufacturing efficiency. Large and small IC companies from around the world trust TSMC with their manufacturing needs, thanks to its unique integration of cutting-edge process technologies, pioneering design services, manufacturing productivity and product quality.
TSMC strongly believes that the solar photovoltaics (PV) industry promises continued high growth while creating environmental benefits and significant long term economic value. To deliver on this promise, technology advances and efficient, large-scale manufacturing are essential. TSMC Solar will differentiate itself in these key areas, extending TSMC's capabilities and proven success in semiconductor IC technology and manufacturing into the solar industry.
TSMC Solar's business focus is primarily on high-efficiency CIGS (Copper Indium Gallium Selenium) thin-film solar solutions, and will address all major worldwide markets. Building on continuous technology advancement, manufacturing excellence and supported by TSMC's financial strength, TSMC Solar aims to achieve leading thin-film cost by 2014, while ramping quickly to grow market share.
To accelerate its solar business growth and ensure access to competitive technologies, TSMC has made strategic investments and formed long term, win-win relationships with strategic partners CIGS technology developer, Stion Corp. and crystalline silicon PV manufacturer, Motech Industries.
Beginning in 2011, TSMC Solar will sell premium quality crystalline silicon PV modules in the German and other key European markets. These modules will be designed and manufactured in Germany for TSMC Solar by CENTROSOLAR Group AG. This effort complements TSMC Solar's CIGS plans, increasing the breadth of market segments addressed and serving European customers together with another trusted name.

Manufacturing
TSMC Solar will serve the global solar market with CIGS thin-film modules manufactured in its own facilities, with production capacity reaching 1 GW (gigawatts) in the next 3-5 years. Construction began on the first production facility on September 16, 2010 in Taichung, Taiwan when our Solar Thin-Film R&D Center and Fab broke ground.
TSMC Solar plans to invest US$258 million for the first phase of the facility which is scheduled to enter commercial production in Q1 2012 and reach yearly capacity of 100MW (megawatts) in thin-film photovoltaic modules by the end of 2012. A second phase is planned for the 5.2 hectare site, which will expand production to over 700MW.
