For many Taiwan families, education is the major path to improve their lives, and reading is the key to education and learning. Only by reading can children create their own future. However, the inadequacy of resources in rural schools is exacerbated by the recent widening gap between rural and urban areas. They need more assistance from outside to help children get a chance for their future.
In 2004, CommonWealth Education Foundation initiated 「Hope Reading Program」to pool resources from the society in the efforts to narrow the rural-urban gap. TSMC is the first enterprise to support the idea and to sponsor this reading program. In the past years TSMC Education and Culture Foundation has provided two hundred rural schools with fifty thousand books. In addition, the foundation established TSMC Book Reading Volunteer Program to read stories to elementary school children in remote Hsinchu and Tainan area. The program hopes to open a window of future for these resource-deprived children through reading. |
