Hsinchu, Taiwan, July 9, 2001– Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (“ TSMC” or “ the Company” ) (TAIEX: 2330, NYSE: TSM), today announced that net sales for June 2001 totaled NT$8,515 million, approximately equal to May 2001 sales figures. On a year-over-year basis, net sales declined 29.1% in June 2001 versus the same period a year ago. Total net sales increased 9.5% for the period January through June 2001, to NT$65,818 million, compared to the same period a year ago.
Ms. K. C. Chen, TSMC spokesperson, stated that net sales for the second quarter of 2001 decreased 33.5% from the first quarter of 2001 because the semiconductor market was softer than expected. Despite current market conditions, the Company still earned a modest profit in operating and net income.
Ms. Chen also stated that TSMC’s June 2001 sales indicated stabilization, and the Company has seen positive signs of gradual improvement for the second half of 2001.
