TSMC Appoints New Corporate Marketing Vice President

Science-Based Industrial Park, Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, May 10, 1999 - Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company ("TSMC" or the "Company") (TAIEX: 2330, NYSE: TSM) announced today that the Company has restructured its Design Service department and Memory Development department to become one organization. Dr. Ping Yang, who will head the new unit, has been named vice-president, Design Service & Memory Development and reports to Dr. F.C. Tseng, president of TSMC. Dr. Yang was formerly vice president of corporate marketing.

TSMC also announced that Mr. Michael M. Pawlik has been appointed as vice-president of corporate marketing to succeed Dr. Yang and will report to Mr. Ron Norris, senior vice-president of world-wide marketing and sales.

Prior to joining TSMC, Mr. Pawlik was vice president of marketing for Burr- Brown Corporation where he was responsible for all product management, promotional activities, customer service, marketing planning and communications.

A veteran of 23 years in semiconductor marketing, sales and operations, Mr. Pawlik earned his MS in Electronic Engineering from University of Maine.
