TSMC Promoted Meng Chao Tzeng to North-Site VP

Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, June 1, 2001 Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TSMC or the Company) (NYSE: TSM) today announced that Mr. Meng Chao Tzeng has been promoted from Senior Director to Vice-President of North-Site, in charge of the operations of Fab 1, Fab 2 and Fab 5. He will report directly to TSMC President, Dr. F. C. Tseng.

Mr. Meng Chao Tzeng holds an MS degree in Applied Chemistry from Chung Yuan University. Mr. Tzeng jointed TSMC when it was first founded in 1987, following an earlier assignment at the Electronics Research & Service Organization of Taiwan’s Industry Technology Research Institute. In his 14 years at TSMC, Mr. Tzeng has transitioned from a basic level Process Engineer to Section Manager, Manager, Director and then Senior Director of TSMC North-Site.

Mr. Tzeng is an experienced and knowledgeable authority in the IC industry and was personally responsible for ensuring that TSMC was the first semiconductor company to apply a Standard Mechanical Interface(SMIF) system to the entire IC manufacturing environment. Currently, SMIF has become the industry standard for 300 mm manufacturing facilities, said TSMC President F. C. Tseng.
