Hsinchu, Taiwan, August 9, 2001– Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (“ TSMC” or “ the Company” ) (TAIEX: 2330, NYSE: TSM), today announced that net sales for July 2001 totaled NT$8,604 million, representing an increase of 1 percent over June 2001 sales. On a year-over-year basis, net sales declined 42.7 percent in July 2001 compared to the same period a year ago. Total net sales of NT$74,423 million represents a decrease of 6.9 percent for the January through July 2001 period, compared to the same period a year ago.
Ms. K. C. Chen, TSMC spokesperson, stated that the Company hit its sales revenue bottom during the months of May and June, and that July 2001 sales have taken a gradual upturn. At the same time, the Company announced that its book-to-bill ratio is above 1.0 in July. TSMC believes that the second half of 2001 is expected to gradually improve.
