Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, March 9, 1999- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TAIEX: 2330, NYSE: TSM), ("TSMC" or "the Company" ) oday announced that its net sales for February, 1999, were NT$3,717 million; revenues from January to February, 1999 were NT$7,562 million.
Mr. YC Huang, Spokesman of TSMC, noted that due to the fewer number of working days because of Chinese Lunar Year holidays and fab shutdown for annual equipment maintenance, unit sales of February, 1999 were less than those of January, 1999. Nevertheless, average selling price and product mix were better on a month-over-month comparison. Therefore, sales of February, 1999 only decreased slightly by 3.3% in comparison with those of January, 1999.
Compared with those of early 1998 when TSMC was in the midst of its peak sales period, sales revenues of February, 1999 and sales revenues of January, 1999 through February, 1999 declined 29.7% and 29.6% respectively over the same period a year ago.
TSMC's order volume has continued to grow in the recent months. In order to accommodate customer demand, TSMC will continue to expand its production capacity. As a result, the 1999 capital expenditures are expected to be increased to approximately NT$26.5 billion for TSMC, and around NT$3.5 billion for WaferTech, TSMC's US joint venture.
