Hsinchu, Taiwan, November 8, 2001– Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (“ TSMC” or “ the Company” ) (TAIEX: 2330, NYSE: TSM), today announced that net sales for October 2001 totaled NT$10,338 million, representing an increase of 11.1 percent over September 2001 sales. On a year-over-year basis, net sales declined 40.8 percent in October 2001 compared to the same period a year ago. Total net sales from January to October 2001 were NT$103,096 million, a decrease of 20.6 percent from the same period a year ago.
Ms. K. C. Chen, TSMC spokesperson and senior vice president, stated that the Company’s monthly sales revenue hit bottom during the months of May and June, 2001. Sales have increased steadily since then to the October 2001 mark of NT$10,338 million. Since March, this was the first time that the Company’s sales revenue surpassed NT$ 10 billion. It is expected that the fourth quarter could follow this gradually improving trend, ultimately exceeding the operational performance of the third quarter.
