Hsinchu, Taiwan, January 9, 2002–Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (“ TSMC” or “ the Company” ) (TAIEX: 2330, NYSE: TSM), today announced that net sales for December 2001 totaled NT$11,733 million, representing an increase of 6.1 percent over November 2001 sales. On a year-over-year basis, net sales declined 35.5 percent in December 2001 compared to the same period a year ago. This allowed TSMC to realize a quicker upturn than the industry as a whole. As a consequence, the Company’s monthly sales for the second half of 2001 increased steadily, with December 2001 sales registering a 6.1 percent increase over November 2001. The Company has therefore outperformed its year 2001 financial forecast , which was last updated in early December.
