Hsinchu, Taiwan, September 7, 2001– Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (“ TSMC” or “ the Company” ) (TAIEX: 2330, NYSE: TSM), today announced that net sales for August 2001 totaled NT$9,028 million, representing an increase of 4.9 percent over July 2001 sales. On a year-over-year basis, net sales declined 43.8 percent in August 2001 compared to the same period a year ago. Total net sales of NT$83,451 million represents a decrease of 13.1 percent for the January through August 2001 period, compared to the same period a year ago.
Ms. K. C. Chen, TSMC spokesperson, stated that the Company hit its sales revenue bottom during the months of May and June 2001. July 2001 sales increased 1 percent over June 2001 sales, while August 2001 sales grew 4.9 percent over July 2001. It is expected that the months of September through December 2001 could follow this gradually improving trend.
