Hsinchu, Taiwan, June 8, 2001– Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (“ TSMC” or “ the Company” ) (TAIEX: 2330, NYSE: TSM), today announced that net sales for May 2001 totaled NT$8,551 million, representing a decrease of 7.4% from April 2001 sales. On a year-over-year basis, net sales declined 21.8% in May 2001 versus the same period a year ago. Total net sales increased 19.2% for the period January through May 2001, to NT$57,303 million, compared to the same period a year ago.
Ms. K. C. Chen, TSMC spokesperson, stated that based on the Company's book-to-bill ratios for April and May, the second quarter appears, at this time, to be the bottom of the current downturn. Despite having no clear sign of the industry's prospects for the second half of 2001, the Company still expects the outlook to improve.
