Hsinchu, Taiwan, R.O.C. – December 17, 2015 – TSMC today announced that the Company earned the highest ranking for the Semiconductor Manufacturing Sector in IEEE Spectrum magazine’s “Patent Power Scorecard”, affirming TSMC’s technology innovation as well as patent portfolio and strategy.
As a leader in semiconductor manufacturing technologies and innovations, TSMC invests billions of dollars in research and development each year. The number one ranking for patents generated by TSMC’s research marks the second consecutive year that TSMC reached the top 10 of the Semiconductor Manufacturing Sector in the scorecard.

IEEE Spectrum is the flagship magazine of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE). It has published its “Patent Power Scorecard” annually since 2007, and divides thousands of leading companies, academic institutions, nonprofit organizations, and government agencies worldwide into 17 sectors to rank their “Patent Power”. “Patent Power” is quantitatively evaluated based on the growth, impact, originality, and generality of an organization’s patent portfolio.
