Hsin-Chu, Taiwan, April 9, 1999- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company Ltd. (TAIEX: 2330, NYSE: TSM), ("TSMC" or "the Company" ) today announced that its net sales for March, 1999, were NT$4,939 million; revenues for the first quarter of 1999 were NT$12,501 million.
Mr. YC Huang, Spokesman of TSMC, noted that as a result of an obvious pick-up in demand, unit sales in March, 1999 increased substantially on a month-over-month comparison. The increase of unit sales consequently contributed to a 32.9% growth in sales revenues of March, 1999 compared with those of February, 1999.
In comparison with those of early 1998 when TSMC was in the midst of its peak sales period, sales revenues of 1999 first quarter declined 20.6%. Nevertheless, on a sequential basis, sales revenues of 1999 first quarter increased 7.5% given that there were fewer working days in the first quarter of 1999 due to Chinese Lunar Year holidays and fab shutdown for annual equipment maintenance.
Mr. YC Huang pointed out that in March, 1999 the Company's booking volume reached another monthly record high, and meanwhile, the utilization of capacity was over 90%. It is expected that the Company's 1999 first quarter operating income will outperform that of 1998 fourth quarter.
