TSMC spends a huge amount of time and money researching and developing the next generation process technology. It has to be sure all aspects from device models, PDKs, design flow and foundation IPs to silicon characterization, debug, packaging and test will be perfect for when our customers deliver their products for mass production. The only way to do this is have TSMC Circuit Designers work in parallel with our technology colleagues to ensure the best possible result.

TSMC’s Ottawa Design Center (ODC) is just under 100 people strong and growing in size every year since 2007. The main focuses at ODC are: Memory Compiler, Hi-Speed IOs, BIST/DFT and TestChip design and layout. The center is 100% dedicated to circuit R&D in advanced processes.

The Ottawa Design Center works with other TSMC R&D groups around the world: in Taiwan, China, Japan and the USA. While individual programs run autonomously here the overall specifications, methodology and quality standards are agreed upon and aligned through worldwide meetings both online and in person.

All ICs need standard cells, memories and IOs to function. To test complex SoC nowadays one must also include BIST and DFT. Therefore when developing new processes TSMC must build testchips which have these common elements. At ODC we work on Memory Compilers, Hi-Speed IOs, BIST/DFT and TestChip design. Some of these foundation IPs are also used by lead customers in their products.

The Ottawa Design Center’s main customers are the process technology teams developing the next generation and TSMC’s early access, lead customers.
