TSMC 16nm (N16) and 12nm (N12) process technologies enable 4K120 (120Hz high frame rate) digital TVs, over-the-top (OTT) dongles, and set-top-box products. Silicon content will increase to support high performance, low power emerging applications such as cloud gaming.
The TSMC N16 process is a good example of extending a technology’s life by driving cost reduction, while enhancing performance, power, and area (PPA). Continuous improvement provides flexible technology selection for product roadmaps.
The latest addition to the 16nm/12nm process family is the 12nm FinFET compact plus (12FFC+). The 12FFC+ improves speed by 7% or power by 15%, compared to 28HPC+. Existing IP can be re-simulated for margin checks, re-characterized for design update, or fine-tuned to fully leverage speed and power advantages.
